Ok deep breath, here we go ...
Perhaps you will permit me a petite pause on your post perusals ... Presently I am prone to ponder pourquoi the unpretentious pea is perpetually passed over rather than promoted as the prevailing performer in our principal meal, when perhaps precociously on my part, I perceive the plain pea can pack the perfect palate punch ... Particularly in this Pea Pesto Pasta, perfectly prepared so that it is rich and creamy with parmesan and smoked scamorza (smoked mozzarella) ... aw shoot, that surely shattered the P streak!!
Seriously though, I love how cheesy and creamy the sauce becomes when you loosen it with a little pasta water. The peas remain the star flavour and the smoked mozzarella adds a beautiful smoky background note, which definitely wouldn't be the same without it. We added some garlicky sundried tomatoes for an added tasty texture too.
Pea-fection! Xx

The Magnificent Pea: A Culinary Marvel
The humble pea is frequently overlooked, overshadowed by flashier vegetables like asparagus and artichokes. However, peas are a powerhouse in nutrition, boasting high levels of vitamins A, C, and K. They are rich in antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress in the body.
Incorporating peas into your meals not only boosts health benefits but also adds a fresh burst of flavour. For example, using just one cup of peas can deliver about 8 grams of protein, making them a fantastic alternative for vegetarians seeking higher protein options. Peas can enhance various dishes, from salads to soups, contributing a creamy texture when pureed.
Pea pesto is quickly becoming a popular alternative that highlights the versatility of this ingredient. By blending peas with fresh herbs and quality olive oil, you achieve a vibrantly flavourful sauce that rivals any traditional pesto. It’s a quick, healthy option for pasta, sandwiches, or even as a dip.
Pea Pesto Pasta - Rising Stars of the Recipe: Ingredients Matter
Creating the best Pea Pesto Pasta starts with high-quality ingredients. Each element enhances the dish's unique flavour profile. Here’s what you’ll need:
Fresh or Frozen Peas: The dish's star! While fresh peas shine in flavour, frozen peas offer a convenient and nutritious alternative since they are often frozen at peak freshness.
Parmesan Cheese: This aged cheese adds depth and richness, with just two ounces containing around 20% of your daily calcium needs.
Smoked Scamorza (or Smoked Mozzarella): The addition of smoked cheese creates a delightful smoky flavour that elevates the overall taste, transforming a simple dish into something exceptional.
Garlicky Sundried Tomatoes: A handful can add an invigorating burst of tangy flavour and varied texture throughout the pasta.
High-Quality Olive Oil: Vital for achieving a creamy consistency and ensuring all flavours meld beautifully.
Pasta of Choice: For a satisfying meal, opt for pasta shapes that hold sauce well. Bow ties, fusilli, or spaghetti are ideal and can make for an eye-catching presentation.
Using fresh, flavorful ingredients, your Pea Pesto Pasta will not only be visually appealing but will also leave a lasting impression.
Bringing It All Together: Cooking Instructions
Making Pea Pesto Pasta is easy and enjoyable. Follow these simple steps for a delightful dinner:
Cook the Pasta: Begin by boiling a pot of salted water. Add your pasta and cook according to the package instructions until it reaches the perfect al dente texture. Reserve about a cup of the pasta water before draining.
Prepare the Pea Pesto: In a blender, combine the peas, grated Parmesan cheese and smoked scamorza. Blend until smooth. Gradually drizzle in the olive oil while blending until you achieve your desired creamy texture. If you find the mixture too thick, add a little reserved pasta water to loosen it.
Combine: Return the drained pasta to the pot over low heat, mixing in the pea pesto thoroughly to ensure every piece is coated. Throw in the roughly chopped sun dried tomatoes.
Final Touches: Adjust the sauce’s consistency with more pasta water. Taste and season with salt and black pepper to enhance flavours.
Serve: Plate your pasta and don’t forget to garnish with extra grated Parmesan and a drizzle of olive oil for an inviting finish. Get ready to enjoy a dish that is both creamy and flavourful!
Exploring Variations
While this Pea Pesto Pasta recipe is fantastic as is, there are many ways to make it your own. Try substituting different nuts, like walnuts or pine nuts, for unique textures and flavours. Fresh herbs such as basil or mint can add a fragrant twist.
For extra protein, grilled chicken or sautéed shrimp make perfect additions. Alternatively, toss in roasted vegetables like asparagus or bell peppers for added nutrition and flavour.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to crafting a memorable pea pesto dish!
Happy cooking!
