Tips & Suggestions
✨ Choose one thing to make the star.
You don't need to make every element elaborate. A beautiful piece of fish, a good cheese, seasonal fruit or a really lovely sauce can do most of the work.
✨ Keep the sides simple.
If the main event has a little more going on, let the accompaniments breathe. A few well-chosen ingredients are often much more effective than a plate full of competing flavours.
✨ Presentation matters — but don't overthink it. A little height, a scattering of fresh herbs, a drizzle of sauce or a few carefully placed ingredients can make something look restaurant-worthy without requiring a degree in food styling.
✨ Make what you can ahead.
Fancy food doesn't have to mean frantic food. Prepare sauces, dressings, desserts and anything else that can happily wait before your guests arrive.
✨ Use ingredients you know.
There's nothing wrong with trying something new, but dinner for guests probably isn't the moment to discover that you've never actually cooked a whole artichoke before. 😏
✨ Don't forget the finishing touches.
A squeeze of lemon, a little fresh herb, a final grind of black pepper or a few flakes of sea salt can make a dish feel properly finished.
✨ And remember who you're cooking for.
The best “fancy” meal is one where you actually get to sit down and enjoy it too.

Jo's Kitchen Note ...
I'm rather fond of recipes that look as though you've gone to far more trouble than you actually have.
Give me something I can prepare ahead, a little bit of kitchen theatre and a plate that looks beautiful when it reaches the table, and I'm happy.
And if everyone thinks I've been slaving away in the kitchen for hours?
I'll probably just smile mysteriously and let them think it.
